Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Guitar Tone?

from snow_and_rain: "I agree, I think it's the Sunburst Strat, although he was playing that funny-looking Alembic project in March. As far as tone, I'd probably go with the Graham Nash Strat ("Alligator") or perhaps the Wolf. "

I'm with you on this - love the music and the sweet guitar tone from this period. He did switch guitars a lot in 71-72, but not surprisingly, gets wonderful results no matter which guitar he's playing. To these ears, JG gets a horn-like quality that I love - like a New Orleans jazz band marching juantily down the street. (Think of '72 Ramble On Rose or Tennessee Jed)

Least favorite is Tiger - sometimes the sound is strident and choppy, and I'm not a fan of a lot of effects. Not crazy about the early guitars 66-68 either, but by 69 I think JG achieved the sound he was after.

Here's a link to help people relate guitars to the periods...

Thanks for the link. There's also this one, http://obie1.homesite.net/deadcd/garcia_guitars.htm , which has some good info but is less well-organized than your link. I'd bookmarked it cuz I have this idea that someday I may actually have a shot at figuring out which guitar is which :-)

Oh, and John, on the horn-like quality -- you and Jerry's mom both! (Though her comment is on an earlier guitar.) From an '83 interview in Conversations with the Dead:

Jerry: My mom came to one show, even. That was incredible ... She came when we played at the Rock Garden out on Mission Street, with Charles Lloyd, back in around [March] 67.

Jill Johnson (now Phil's wife): How did she feel about it?

Jerry: She liked it. In a weird sort of way, she liked it. She asked me, "How did you get the guitar to sound like a horn like that?" My mother was a little on the far-out side.

Phil: What a hip question!

Jerry: Yeah, my father was a musician.

Phil: I'd have shit if my mom had asked that.

Jerry: That was the first thing she asked me.

Btw, I attempted to be an intrepid researcher and find the show he's talking about; guess it would have been from a series of shows between 3/28 and 4/2/67. Can't find any recording, but here's the poster. Jerry's Mom's Only Show? http://www.dead.net/sites/deadbeta.rhino.com/files/images/19670328_0156.jpg
